Federal Legislation exists that governs the use of the Canada Organic Logo and the term organic for products sold between provinces and internationally. Ontario, however, currently has no legislation that regulates the use of the term organic for products produced and sold solely within Ontario.

The Government of Ontario is currently considering the passage of ‘The Organic Products Act’ (Bill 54), an important piece of legislation that would regulate the use of the term organic for products solely produced and sold within Ontario or that do not bear the Canada Organic Logo.

The Organic Council of Ontario needs your input to help shape the future of this bill and affect how it gets implemented in the province for the benefit and security of Ontario’s Organic sector.

OCO Has Three Proposed Options for the Implementation of this Bill:

1) Adopting the Canadian Organic Standards in Ontario;
2) Adopting the Canadian Organic Standards in Ontario with a small-scale exemption (under $10,000);
3) Adopting the Canadian Organic Standards in Ontario with a small-scale self-declaration registry (under $30,000).

The Organic Products Act will have major implications for organic growers in Ontario, so we want to hear your thoughts on this bill! Please fill out this five-minute survey to demonstrate your support for this bill.
